The Giant Tutubi Fan originally conceived, designed and built by Julian and Linda as a surprise feature in the Philippine Festival parade
Deputy Chief of Mission, Evan Garcia dwarfed by the abaniko with creators Julian and Linda.
The fan timeline began with early man who used a leafy tree branch or other broad based leaf to provide relief from the heat. Early man soon found other uses for the discovery and began refining it leading the fan to become a form of art and an indication of social status.
The hand – held fan has a long history of providing comfort in a variety of everyday situations: in crowded, stuffy indoor places; during outdoor events; at galas, clubs, dinner dances and weddings, to name a few.
Tutubi Productions created this fan specifically for this important Centennial year is to acknowledge some of the individual contributions of the past 100 years in a display, with input from members of our community illustrating the various waves of immigration recognized to begin in Hawaii in 1906 with the Sekadas.
Each pane of the fan is a visual piece of our history, presented separately to illustrate the beauty of individuality. When the individuals in a community work in creative unity, celebrating our diversity; honoring our past; and preparing for our future – we are all united in beauty.
Please enjoy this Centennial fan celebrating accomplishments: from the Sekadas, the Alaskeros, Musikeros, Pensionadas, Fulbright scholars, the inventor of the karaoke machine, artists, doctors, lawyers, veterans, computer professionals, generals, chefs, and our younger generation who with their brilliant minds and wonderful Philippine-American values joined together to offer you an example of 100 years of creative unity in the community.
